“In numerous letters to his family and friends, Le Corbusier willingly plays the game of associations and follows the thread of his imagination. He moves from one place to another and speaks of the resonances they have with each other in his mind and in his memories. For example, when he first moved to rue Nungesser, the rooftop garden of his summer apartment reminded him of the garden at Villa “Le Lac” in Switzerland. He evokes this resemblance as a retinal persistence onto which are grafted emotions and memories, sometimes precise, sometimes vague.

It is this intuition that we explore in our exhibition, as we move the location of our residence (the apartment-studio on rue Nungesser et Coli in Boulogne) to that of the exhibition (the Maison La Roche in Paris). By telescoping the apartment-studio in an abstract way (through the choice of colors and the repetition of the mark on the floor of the bedroom door) within the Maison La Roche, we insist on the essential fact that every place we visit is always inhabited by our own ghosts. To be present somewhere is always to project other places into it, and to bring back an irremediably absent elsewhere.”

Presentation of the artists

Mélanie Feuvrier and Hugo Fortin are graduates of the Beaux-Arts de Paris. They work between Paris and New York, collaborating on participatory projects and residencies where they explore the role of the artist and the status of the work of art as the fruit of an encounter between people and places. They have been in residence at the Foundation as part of our partnership with the Beaux-Arts de Paris.

THEME: IN AN APARTMENT From June 3rd to June 26th, 2021

In the exhibition “Theme: In an apartment”, artist duo Mélanie Feuvrier and Hugo Fortin telescope the traces left by Le Corbusier in his apartment-studio at the Maison La Roche. They also present the guestbook-like written traces left by visitors. Through these two gestures, they are interested in inhabiting a place and being present there: what do we project onto it? what do we leave of ourselves? The exhibition is a reminder that being here and now is first and foremost a personal experience, in which the imagination and experience of each individual are interwoven.
