In his twenties, Charles-Édouard Jeanneret – later known as Le Corbusier – embarked on a grand tour of the Orient.In Istanbul, the first impression was brutal for the Jura-born Protestant: the city was neither soft nor white, but teeming and colourful. The aspiring painter made hundreds of drawings and photographs. His observations revealed the first signs of his transformation: the young Le Corbusier felt his vocation germinating within him, the vocation that would make him one of the greatest geniuses of modern architecture.
